After more than 1,000 total moving jobs, we’ve figured out the best packing tricks. Here are some ideas to get you started.
Purge your items ruthlessly. It’s very likely that you won’t need everything you have stored away. When you purge like this, you have less stuff, fewer moving boxes, use fewer supplies, and save on moving costs. As for prep, make sure you have a folder with all the important stuff: new house information, any paperwork, utility information. Shut off all utilities prior to moving and keep your essentials with you, not on the truck.
Smaller boxes usually hold heavier items like books, whereas larger boxes will carry your clothing, sweatshirts, towels, pillows, blankets, sheets, comforters, etc. If you have to mix heavy and light items, put the heavy stuff on the bottom and the light items on top. Make sure there are no empty spaces for things to roll around.
Helpful Hint: To save boxes, put your clothes in garment bags, wardrobe boxes, or put garbage bags over them.
