Woodbury, Minnesota is a Washington County suburb of roughly 80,000 people, eight miles east of downtown St. Paul. Minnē Movers charges $85 per mover per hour on weekdays for a local Woodbury move, plus the $150 truck fee, which applies because central Woodbury sits inside the 30-mile radius of our Minneapolis warehouse. A two-bedroom home typically runs $1,700 to $2,000.

If you have only moved around the west or north metro, Woodbury reads differently. It is the largest city in Washington County. The grid is newer, the lots wider, the driveways longer, and that changes how a moving day gets scheduled. Here is what we tell people before rolling a truck out to Woodbury.

Why Are People Moving to Woodbury?

Growth, mostly, and the kind that compounds. The U.S. Census Bureau counted 75,102 residents in the 2020 census, and its American Community Survey put the city at 80,590 residents across 31,236 households in the 2024 one-year estimates. Further out, the Metropolitan Council's Imagine 2050 forecast, reported by Woodbury News Net in February 2025, projects Woodbury will reach 94,200 people by 2050.

The housing picture explains much of that. The Census Bureau's American Community Survey five-year estimates put Woodbury's median property value at $450,200 and median household income at $125,310, with a homeownership rate of 77.6 percent. That last figure is the one our crews feel: we load houses with garages and basements here far more often than second-floor walk-ups.

The outdoor inventory is unusual for a suburb this size: the City of Woodbury counts more than 3,600 acres of city-owned land, 180 miles of trails and 63 parks. The retail anchors newcomers learn first are Woodbury Lakes, Tamarack Village, CityPlace and Valley Creek Mall.

How Do You Get Around Woodbury and the East Metro?

Interstate 94 runs along the city's northern boundary. Interstate 494 ends at the junction with I-94 and I-694 on the Woodbury and Oakdale line, which puts Woodbury at the eastern end of the Twin Cities beltway.

Destination Woodbury, the city's official visitor site, puts the city 18 miles east of downtown Minneapolis and five miles west of the Minnesota-Wisconsin border on I-94. From most addresses here you are closer to Wisconsin than to Minneapolis.

Inside the city, two county roads do the work. Radio Drive is County State-Aid Highway 13 and runs north and south as Woodbury's retail spine. Valley Creek Road is County State-Aid Highway 16 and crosses it east to west. Radio Drive stacks up near the I-94 interchange at rush hour, so a truck arriving at 9 a.m. is a different day than one arriving at 7:30.

Transit here changed recently. The METRO Gold Line bus rapid transit opened March 22, 2025, running roughly 10 miles between downtown Saint Paul and Woodbury alongside I-94. The Metropolitan Council calls it the state's first bus rapid transit line to operate primarily within bus-only lanes, with service every 10 to 15 minutes, seven days a week. Its three Woodbury stations are Tamarack, Woodbury Theatre and Woodlane, which holds the park-and-ride and ends the line.

A ramp closure that adds 20 minutes to a loaded truck is not something to discover at 8 a.m. Check MnDOT's roadwork page at dot.state.mn.us/roadwork a few days out.

What Are Woodbury's Neighborhoods and Schools Like?

Woodbury is organized around named developments rather than old streetcar neighborhoods. Stonemill Farms and Dancing Waters are the best-known master-planned communities. What matters to a crew is the housing stock, and Woodbury's skews newer: single-family homes with attached garages, walkout basements and long driveways. A garage lets us stage boxes indoors when the weather turns, a walkout basement adds a ground-level entrance, and a long driveway keeps the truck off the street, which matters more here than in most suburbs.

For schools, most of Woodbury is served by South Washington County Schools, ISD 833, also called SoWashCo Schools. The district covers roughly 84 square miles and about 18,700 students. Besides Woodbury, that territory takes in Afton, Cottage Grove, Newport and St. Paul Park. East metro boundaries do not always follow city lines, so verify assigned schools by street address.

What Does a Local Move in Woodbury Actually Cost?

Local Woodbury moves are billed hourly, because a job's length depends on stair counts, driveway length and how much of the garage got packed. Here are the rates that appear on your estimate.

Line itemRateNotes
Labor, weekdays$85 per mover, per hourMonday through Friday
Labor, weekends and holidays$95 per mover, per hourSaturday, Sunday, holidays
Two-mover crew (weekday)$170 per hourApartments and small homes
Three-mover crew (weekday)$255 per hourMost Woodbury houses
Four-mover crew (weekday)$340 per hourLarger homes or a tight closing window
Truck fee$150 per truckMoves within a 30-mile radius of the warehouse
Fuel surcharge$1 per mileBased on round-trip mileage from the warehouse
Floor protection$50 per home or locationCharged per address
Wardrobe box rentalAbout $5 per boxFor hanging clothes
Senior and military discount10% offApplied to the job

Two details work in your favor. Time is rounded to the nearest 15-minute increment, and the clock stops when items are placed, not when the truck pulls away. Bed reassembly and furniture placement are included in the hourly rate. Basic valuation coverage is 60 cents per pound; anything worth more than $100 per pound, such as jewelry, china or coins, must be declared as extraordinary value. Here is how the rates add up on real jobs.

Home sizeTypical crewTypical hoursPublished total
1-bedroom apartment2 movers3 to 4 hours$700 to $900
2-bedroom home3 movers6 to 7 hours$1,700 to $2,000
3-bedroom home3 movers6 to 7 hoursAbove $2,000
5-bedroom home4 movers8+ hoursAbove $2,000

The three-bedroom row is the one people misread. It runs about the same hours as a two-bedroom, but the heavier load and floor protection at both addresses carry the total past $2,000 instead of inside the $1,700 to $2,000 band. Our line-by-line guide to what movers cost in Minneapolis works a three-bedroom out to $2,085, mileage included.

The other rows work the same way. A two-mover crew at $170 an hour for four hours is $680 in labor; add the $150 truck fee and $50 floor protection at the apartment and you are at $880 before round-trip mileage, which is the part of the bill the published $700 to $900 band covers. A three-mover crew at $255 an hour for six hours is $1,530, and the truck fee plus floor protection at both ends brings a two-bedroom house to $1,780. A five-bedroom clears $2,000 on labor alone, since four movers for eight hours is $2,720. Round-trip mileage at $1 per mile is the line that moves with your address.

What Should You Know Before Moving Day in Woodbury?

Start with winter parking. City ordinance bans on-street parking in Woodbury between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. from November 1 through April 1, even with no snow on the ground, and bans it at any hour once two or more inches have accumulated, until the street has been completely plowed. The rules do not apply to private streets. For a moving truck that means no curbside overnight between November and April, and none at midday after a real snowfall. Stage in the driveway, and if you are moving December through March, read our notes on winter moving first.

Clear the garage and the shed early. Deep garages and backyard sheds are where the things we are not allowed to load collect: gasoline and other fuels, propane cylinders, and lawn and pool chemicals. Drain the mower, hand off the propane, and take the rest to a household hazardous waste drop-off before move week. Our list of what movers won't move has the full non-allowable rundown.

Utilities and trash split three ways. Water and sewer are billed directly by the City of Woodbury, which takes those questions through Public Works at 651-714-3720. Electric, gas, cable and internet are not city services: Xcel Energy handles electric and CenterPoint Energy natural gas, and those accounts need opening before you take possession. Trash works differently again. Woodbury uses an open hauling system, so rather than being assigned a hauler you pick from the list of companies licensed in the city. Ordinance requires weekly collection and curbside recycling.

Your driver's license has a 30-day clock. Under Minnesota Statutes section 171.11, a person who changes permanent domicile must apply within 30 days for a duplicate driver's license showing both the old and new address, and pay the required fee. Our guide to changing your address in Minnesota puts DVS, USPS and the utility accounts in order.

Homestead has a hard deadline. The Minnesota Department of Revenue says homeowners must apply to their county assessor by December 31 to qualify for homestead classification for taxes payable the next year. Washington County confirms that deadline, requires a new application within 30 days of a change in occupancy, and warns that failing to notify within 30 days may subject the property to a penalty. Its Assessment Support Division answers at 651-430-6175.

How Do Minnē Movers Crews Work the Woodbury Area?

Woodbury sits inside our regular service territory, though we do not run a Washington County branch. Crews roll east from our Plymouth Avenue warehouse in Minneapolis, and central Woodbury is roughly 23 to 25 driving miles out, depending on the address. That distance sets two lines on your estimate: the $150 truck fee applies because you are inside the 30-mile radius, and the $1 per mile fuel surcharge is figured on round-trip mileage, which puts most Woodbury addresses near $50. We confirm both before you book.

Our crews work the east metro daily, including Hastings and Inver Grove Heights, which sit in Dakota County rather than Washington County, a distinction that matters when you file for homestead. We operate under USDOT #3334469 and MN DOT #384959, with more than 1,500 five-star Google reviews across the Twin Cities.

Common Questions About Moving to Woodbury

What county is Woodbury, Minnesota in?

Woodbury is in Washington County, in the east metro of the Twin Cities. It is the largest city in the county by population, though Stillwater is the county seat. Its land area is about 34.9 square miles, and its neighbors include Oakdale, Lake Elmo, Cottage Grove, Maplewood, Newport and Afton.

How far is Woodbury from St. Paul and Minneapolis?

According to Destination Woodbury, the city's official visitor site, Woodbury sits eight miles east of downtown Saint Paul, 18 miles east of downtown Minneapolis, 15 miles from MSP Airport and five miles west of the Minnesota-Wisconsin border on I-94. The Census Bureau's American Community Survey puts the average Woodbury commute at about 24 minutes.

How much does a local move in Woodbury cost?

Minnē Movers charges $85 per mover per hour on weekdays and $95 on weekends and holidays, plus a $150 truck fee within 30 miles of the warehouse and a $1 per mile fuel surcharge on round-trip mileage. A one-bedroom apartment with two movers runs $700 to $900, and a two-bedroom home with three movers over six to seven hours runs $1,700 to $2,000. Three-bedroom and larger homes go above $2,000.

What school district serves Woodbury?

Most of Woodbury is served by South Washington County Schools, ISD 833. The district reports about 18,700 students across 16 elementary schools, four middle schools, three comprehensive high schools and two non-traditional high schools, over roughly 84 square miles. Because boundaries do not always follow city lines, confirm assigned schools by street address.

Can you park a moving truck on the street in Woodbury during winter?

Not overnight, and not after a real snowfall. City ordinance bans on-street parking from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. between November 1 and April 1 even with no snow down, and bans it at any hour once two or more inches accumulate, until the street is plowed. Violations draw an administrative citation, so plan on staging the truck in the driveway.

Do you serve the communities around Woodbury?

Yes. Our crews regularly work Lake Elmo, Cottage Grove, Oakdale, Stillwater and Maplewood, along with Hudson across the Wisconsin border, and Hastings and Inver Grove Heights in Dakota County. Moves between Woodbury and any of these are routine east metro jobs, billed at the same hourly rates with the truck fee and mileage confirmed before you book.
